Abstract Refugee return often involves the re-encounter of individuals who were separated for years, but we know little about its impact on social cohesion. We explore this using data from a nationwide survey that conducted in Burundi, country experienced high levels repatriation during 2000s. find refugee has negative feeling community members help each other, could borrow money emergencies non-household members, and is peaceful. The impacts measures reconciliation, post-conflict justice, trust, participation groups are mostly statistically insignificant. also how these effects differ across different sub-samples based ethnic composition, pre-war land scarcity, attitudes towards return. results highlight possible role new migration-related societal divisions affecting post-return
